“The truth is that the body basically has four different energy supply systems that it can draw on depending on the demand and the situation,” he says.

Glucose (sugar) metabolism and lipid (fat) metabolism play the biggest roles in everyday activities and during exercise. The two systems work almost in parallel, the energy share from each varying depending on the body’s requirements.

“Lipid metabolism is the system with the largest energy depot, owing to the gigantic reserves of stored fat,” Froboese explains. A man weighing 70 kg has about 180,000 kilocalories of stored fat, he says.

Although lipid metabolism is almost always active during exercise, Froboese says, it is much less effective in people who are not physically fit.

“Lipid metabolism is directly involved in providing sufficient energy as soon as exercise begins,” Froboese says.

Being the most important energy generator, lipid metabolism should regularly be tapped both in everyday activities and during exercise, Froboese advises.

The patient, who is known as Oscar, received the face transplant in the Hospital Vall D’ Hebron in Barcelona in March after having suffered severe facial injuries in an accident.

In the last four months Oscar has had to overcome two rejections of his new face following a process that saw him receive a transplant that included skin, facial muscles, nose, upper jaw and cheekbones.

At the moment Oscar is still unable to eat solid food and has problems speaking as he is still unable to control the central area of his lips.

The surgeon who carried out the operation, Joan Pere Barret, explained that his faces does, however, have feeling and that although he will still need many hours of rehabilitation, he should be able to talk and eat normally in the future.

Oscar is also unable to fully close his eyes, but once again the surgeon assured that he will be able to do so in the future.

“He will do that soon. He has recovered the movement in his eyebrows and he is also able to smile. There are two Oscars: one before and one after the operation,” conformed Dr Barret.

Meanwhile Oscar’s sister gave an insight into his feelings.

“All he wants to do is to recover a normal life. At the moment he can go into the street without people staring at him, he can enjoy a mean with his family … my brother can have a life thanks to the great work that has been carrier out by the doctors,” she told Spanish television station RTVE.

Oscar’s was the third face transplant carried out in Spain, the previous operations took place in Valencia and in Sevilla.

A number of studies have shown an association between obesity and asthma, both of which have become much more common over the past three decades, Dr. Jun Ma of the Palo Alto Medical Research Institute in California note in the medical journal Allergy.

Ma and her team looked at about 4,500 men and women from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2005-2006. About a third were overweight, and another third were obese.

Forty-one percent had some type of allergy, while 8 percent had asthma. The researchers wanted to tease out those rates because allergy and asthma are related in some people.

Twelve percent of the obese individuals had asthma, compared to six percent of the normal-weight study participants. And the likelihood of asthma rose as the body mass index — BMI, a relation of weight and height used to gauge obesity — increased and waist circumferences expanded.

The risk of asthma was more than tripled for the most obese individuals compared to normal weight people.

But the reason why the two might be related is still not clear. Some researchers have suggested the system-wide, low-grade inflammation that occurs with obesity may be a factor, while others have argued that resistance to the key blood-sugar-regulating hormone insulin — which rises with excess weight — is the reason for the link. That resistance often foretells the onset of diabetes.

Thirty-seven percent were either diabetic or had insulin resistance. The study did not find any evidence, however, that insulin resistance was responsible for the relationship, and allergy was not related to either weight or insulin resistance.

The findings don’t rule out the possibility that insulin may be a link between obesity and asthma, Ma told Reuters Health by e-mail. There are a host of other potential reasons for the association, which seems complex, she added.
